Granadilla

Where the photo is from
La Ceja

It looks like a passion fruit that grew up and calmed down.

A hard orange shell, a white foamy layer underneath and greyish jelly seeds inside. You break it open with your hands like an egg and eat it with a spoon, or simply slurp it out. The seeds go down with it, they are soft and you do not mind them.

The taste is nowhere near passion fruit. Passion fruit is sour enough to tear your mouth apart; granadilla is sweet, gentle and barely acidic at all. If you avoid passion fruit because of the sourness, this one might be for you.

I first tasted it at the covered market in La Ceja. I have been looking for it ever since.

Praktická poznámkaI am not sure I have ever eaten anything that looks this off-putting. For some reason it reminded me terribly of the eggs from Alien, with a facehugger about to jump out at any moment. And then you bite into it.
